Stallion semen freezing is a method used to store stallion semen for later use in equine reproduction. Semen freezing allows semen to be stored at very low temperatures (usually in liquid nitrogen at -196°C) without affecting its viability and ability to fertilise an egg for many years.
Freezing stallion semen involves the same basic steps: preparation for breeding and semen collection.
The quality of stallion semen can vary considerably, which may require specific freezing and storage techniques. Sperm from stallions often move more rapidly and are more fragile than those from other animals, requiring the use of cryoprotectants and other techniques to maintain their viability during freezing. Freezing stallion semen is a common practice in the equine breeding industry, allowing the preservation of high quality horse semen for future use.
To be frozen, the semen must be cooled quickly after collection to minimise cell damage. The sperm concentration is increased using a technique called centrifugation. Then a cryoprotectant is added to protect the sperm during freezing. The sperm is then frozen at a temperature of -196 degrees Celsius and stored in liquid nitrogen.
We also offer the possibility of freezing epididymal semen, collected from the organs removed during the castration of your horse. This technique allows you to keep a possible reproductive potential in a horse that you do not intend to breed.
